DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Portuguese Fado singer Ana Moura comes to the Opera House on March 9th.  Her 2011 show was a highlight for many here in Napa.  Her voice is incredible, and she’ll be performing music from her new CD “Desfado,” where she does more than just traditional Fado.  Her version of the Joni Mitchell song “A Case of You” is worth the price of admission alone!

This year, we’ll be doing more shows in our Cafe Cabaret series.  On March 10th,  Madeline Eastman + Randy Porter will perform downstairs at 4:00 PM.  Madeline is one of the premier singers in the bay area, and Randy is a great pianist based our of Portland.  They have a beautiful new duo CD titled “A Quiet Thing.”

On March 13th, Opera returns to the Opera House when Livermore Opera Presents: La Traviata.  Ever since I started here, people have told me that they wanted more classical music and opera at the Opera House.  Well, here’s your chance!  Livermore Opera is a very talented troupe, and Traviata is always a popular work.  There’s also a VIP reception after the show.

We’re celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day at the Opera House with 2 great shows.  On March 14th, we have Rhythm of the Dance; an amazing show along the lines of Riverdance with a 2 hour celebration of music and dance by an amazing troupe.  On March 15th we’ll feature the group Altan.  I’ve been a big fan of this group for years.  Altan was started by lead vocalist Mairead Ni Mhaonaig; they are probably the world's foremost Irish traditional group with over a million records sold.

On March 16th Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra will blow the roof off of the Opera House!  This is a great chance to see this group in a small setting.  They’re playing several shows in the bay area, but we are the smallest room in the area, and they’ll be playing almost completely acoustic here.  This is where the Opera House shines, with a group like this!

Comedian Paul Reiser appears on March 23rd, with Kellen Erskine opening the show.  The star of “Mad About You” Mr. Reiser got his start as a stand up comedian, and comics universally agree that he is one of the best stand up’s ever!

The Brazilian Duo of vocalist Luciana Souza and guitarist Romero Lubambo is one of my favorites.  The voice of Luciana Souza is pitch perfect, and Lubambo is an incredible guitarist.  Think Tuck and Patti but from Brazil!

On March 30, we have the first of our 10th anniversary benefit shows with Steve Tyrell and special guest Diane Schuur.  2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the re-opening of the Opera House, and we’ll be doing shows all year to celebrate while raising funds to keep the Opera House strong and vibrant.  Top tier ticket buyers for this show will get a special pre-show reception with food and drink, as well as a meet and greet with Steve Tyrell.  There will be special drinks and desserts for all.  Steve Tyrell is the consummate entertainer along the line of Frank Sinatra.  This will be the most fun you’ve ever had while supporting the Opera House .

Canadian guitarist Jesse Cook performs his style of ‘nuevo flamenco’ on April 6th.  He’s had several PBS specials, and his music is a great blend of flamenco, jazz, and world music styles.

Country singer Kathy Mattea is in on April 13th.  She’s got a great voice, and a fantastic new CD.  I like performers who mix it up (as you can tell!) and her music is a mix of bluegrass, Celtic, folk, and traditional country music.  She’s won Grammys had a bunch of hits, and is a great performer!

Sunday April 14th at 4:00 another Cafe Cabaret Concert with Quartet San Francisco, doing a tribute to Dave Brubeck.  The string quartet, led by violinist Jeremy Cohen uses both jazz and classical music sensibilities.

An Acoustic Evening with Medeski, Martin and Wood on April 19th.  One of the most popular bands in the ‘jam band’ scene, this will be a great chance to catch MMW in a small room and playing acoustic.  All three band members are busy with other projects, but when they play together, the magic happens.

Arlo Guthrie returns to the Opera House with Here Comes the Kid, a Tribute to his father Woody Guthrie's 100th birthday on April 20th.  I’ve been a fan of Arlo Guthrie since I was in elementary school  In fact, one of my earliest musical memories was going to see him live when I was in junior high.  Of course, Woody Gutherie was one of the most important figures in American Music, and there’s no one more fitting to pay tribute to him than Arlo.

Everyone loves the blues, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been at the forefront of modern blues since the mid 70’s.  Kim Wilson blows a mean harp, and this show will rock the Opera House to its foundation. They'll be here on April 26th.

A popular barber and great raconteur recalls the love of his life in a drama that blends a celebration of youthful romance with a darker tale of prejudice and classism. In the waning decades of the 19th century, Kari is born with a cleft palate, the doctor attending the birth suggesting that the kind thing to do would be to drown him “like a kitten.” Instead, he grows up to be a well-liked coiffeur whose kindness and charm win him the heart of a powerful merchant’s beautiful daughter. But the older man’s disdain for Kari’s lowly status and birth defect leads him to oppose their union. Academy Award®-winning writer-director Xavier Koller tacks back an...

"The music says it all. Mozart is cool." So said the self-confessed "opera ignoramus" Doris Dorrie before she grabbed hold of one of the sacred cows of the operatic repertoire and transformed it into a "hippie musical." Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte ("Thus Do They All") was first staged in Vienna in 1790; it is a timeless opera, one that in fact became increasingly popular in the twentieth century as accusations of its triviality were replaced by greater recognition of its depths. Mozart's delight in juggling the comic and the serious is on full display here, and the opera's adaptability is proof of its strength. Under the motto "To cheat on your partner or not, that is the question," Dorrie stamped an originality on the work which impressed even the skeptical critics.
